#transing my damn gender

I'm sure other people have talked about this re: transitioning as transfemme, but there really is something absolutely magical about looking in the mirror and seeing a reflection you love
Not "tolerate" or "accept", but well and truly love
This isn't something I thought would be possible, especially before I realized I was a girl. I'd begrudgingly accepted my face and my body as things I'd just have to deal with, not parts of myself that I was happy to have.
After over a year of hormones (and s l o w l y learning how to appear like An Girl), I can say with confidence that the meme about super depressed boys turning into gorgeous, confident girls is completely true
Anyway I'm hot as fuck now and I'm making it everyone else's problem
#personal#transing my damn gender#and just to head off the inevitable fucking discourse: no people don't need to medically transition (or experience dysphoria) to be trans#everyone's transition is going to look different and have different goals. fundamentally it's about becoming yourself#so yeah this isn't a truscum/transmedicalist safe space. if you think you trans then you trans 🤘🏻 join the rainbow and grab a blahaj

Gender Is A Fuck
Like an entity of barbed wire wrapped in blooming flowers
I’m a guy creature that likes to sit down in hot showers
Like wire mother getting railed by the mother cloth
I turn of my lamps because I’m too afraid of moths
A typhoon of gritty spite and gentle touches
I could rend metal apart when I get those mucnhes’
Dont touch my fucking pasta or I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL SCRUMPLE YOUR SKELETON LIKE I’M A GOD DAMNED MEAT GRINDER.
The mind scape is canon now if you ever need a reminder
Fictional death threats and insincere compliments the ultimate zero sum
Silent and heavy but also demonically screeching at the heavens to come get some
The sequel to sex
Nothing everywhere all the time trapped just beneath my skin
Feline hysteria crawling just behind my eyes one with my kin
Honest opinions and bleeding sarcasm
Fine tuned instruments and cataclysmic chasms
Infinite in my fragility still sprinting towards my enemies
Soaring towards the clouds looking for a remedy
A futile fuck you to entropy the struggle is the point.
A feeling of lazy anxiety like I smoked a fucking joint
Like wearing a layered mask of survivable insanity
Heat death rivaled only by my crippling profanity
I don't wear a watch
Gender is kind of botched
#poem#orginal poetry#anne is gay#epic opinion#This poem is my gender#I have become an entity of infinite gender#hilarious#very funny#whagever#Gender#gender stuff#Hbomberguy is gonna fucking find me when he finds out I didn't invent gender reveal parties.#crustacean#Nihilism colors my world like a wet mop#the fuckers#weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee#transgender#I think#I've transed my gender into infinity#You can just use he/him as a stand in if you don't want to read out the entire god damn poem every time you talk about me#My hands are shaking#knees weak#arms are heavy#bornana#Shrimp emotions#I feel like a table trying not to exist#I'm being hunted for sport by the gender police

"people only pick on trans people because they're easy targets" yeah no shit they're easy targets just like flat earthers and antivaxxers. what they believe is absolutely fucking insane when you think about it for more than 2 seconds.
the idea of trans is no different from the idea of predestination.
predestination says only those who have been chosen by god will be saved and will go to heaven. how do you know you're predestined? there is literally no way to tell externally. there is no test you take to make sure you're predestined. you just have to put your faith in jesus and know, internally, in your heart, or whatever. funny how literally everyone who believes this also happens to be one of the ~chosen ones~.
the idea of being trans is that some people are born in the wrong body. how do you know you're born in the wrong body? there is literally no external way to tell, aside from maybe a few "am I trans?" quizlets (which as we all know are 100% accurate always and only made by professionals and not 12 year old furries). you just look inside, or whatever, and somehow "know" or you decide for yourself. then, based on your own self-reporting, which you have no way to externally verify, you expect people to bend to your will and you expect society to give you special privileges that no one else gets. no other man gets to pee in the ladies' or compete in women's sports but once you self-id as trans? well, right this way "ma'am", pay no mind to the women cowering in fear of you. their rights don't matter nearly as much as your feelings. funny how damn near everyone who believes in this also happens to be trans themselves, will a few outliers.
even "gender critical" transes like mr. blaire white and ms. buck angel will talk in hours upon hours of videos about the importance of gatekeeping and protecting women's spaces, yet /they/ demand the exact same privileges as every other "fake" (in their words) trans person on tiktok. do you seriously think "fake" trans people are going to listen to you and suddenly not go into the women's? No! are you fucking kidding me? it's so much easier to tell a buck or a blaire to fuck off than it is to a delusional fetishist who will 100% either hurt you or make a scene. there is no "true trans" because EVERYONE claims to be truly trans, everyone from bruce jenner to the "IT IS MA'AM" gamestop dude.
it fucking baffles me how youtube skeptics - people i used to admire, people who taught me how to think critically about shit - will spend all damn day dunking on flat earthers and creationists but will turn a blind eye to the trans cray and will even go as far as to support them. they think they're so above it all and they can't be fooled, but they have been, and I keep waiting for them to snap out of it - just like I waited for my own family to snap out of christianity - but they haven't.
if you seriously think a dress and some hormones and plastic surgery will make a man into a woman, you're insane, and you're no more crazy than a youtuber who thinks antarctica is an ice wall or a pastor who still prays to his "sky daddy". you have no right to make fun of these people for the insane shit they believe when you believe in this nonsense. you are quite literally the pot calling the kettle black.
and if you're one of those people who's like "oh well i know they're not actually women i just call them that to avoid hurting their feelings" im sorry but you're still in this cult, you're physically in but mentally out and the only way to really get out is to call a spade a spade, admit the emperor has no clothes, admit you were fooled just like me - just like all of us - and speak out against it.

"Contradiction" - a short Transformers comic
Inspired by @thewadapan's call to action in his concluding essay for the @transformers-mosaic archival project, here's an original Mosaic-style strip! Hope you enjoy, and check after the break for commentary!
The secret origin of this comic is that on the last day of TFNation 2024, my pal and longtime TFN roomie Wadapan dropped a concluding essay for his project archiving the entirety of the Transformers: Mosaic short-form fan-comic project. Sunday night goes pretty late at TFN, and gone midnight, many rum'n'cokes deep, I wound up reading Wads' words on my phone in bed while he was brushing his teeth a few metres away.
At the end of the article, he called upon the reader to create their own one-page comic, and inspiration genuinely wound up striking me there in bed! I successfully remembered the idea in the morning, wrote a script on my notes app on the train home, and then scrawled a tiny thumbnail layout for the comic on a post-it when I got home. I then... let five months get away from me. But now I've deployed my (foolish) vector illustration platform of choice, Microsoft PowerPoint, and made the damn thing!
Some director's commentary:
So obviously the big influences here are Budiansky’s take on Headmastering, The Rebirth’s partnering of Arcee and Daniel, and IDW1 Arcee’s story (and swords). I figure it takes place in a unique continuity amalgamating elements of all three. The Budiansky Headmaster material is all about “wouldn’t it be fucked up if a human had to take on the role of a robot and fight in the robot war?”, really focusing on the humans literally having to be their partners. Since Marvel is largely Just Blokes though, that never extends to anyone having to embody a robot with a different gender presentation, while the cartoon has Arcee and Daniel partnered, but doesn’t really touch on the psychology of Headmastering at all. So take “what if Arcee and Daniel partnered under Marvel rules?”, add Arcee’s transness from modern fiction, and your get Danielle realising something about herself!
The phrasing “from the diary of” is, I think, probably inspired by the “From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker” tagline used on the earliest Star Wars novels – I had a beat-up old copy of the SW77 novelisation from a car-boot sale as a kid that I loved.
The shapes in the first three panels are largely drawn as polygons, while Danielle is drawn mostly using smooth curves!
Here’s the incredibly rough post-it note thumbnail I drew last year:

Hi! Happy 2025 :D
You've done an amazing job this past year, Iridis! AphidClan is one of the only clangens I can follow without getting lost or bored within a few updates (including one of my own I tried to start lol); your designs are instantly recognizable and eye-catching, the darker lore is balanced out with enough cute, light moments that it never feels overwhelming or overcomplicated, you express such a wide range of emotions and dynamics so well! Plus the diversity in your character base and your care towards representing a variety of identities, just makes me so happy to see. Everything about this comic is so uniquely creative, it's honestly incredibly impressive.
Obviously nothing against other clangens– just that yours has something special I've been unable to find elsewhere :]
Thank you for everything you've done this year, and I hope the next goes well for you 💞
AWWWW man thank you so much <33 This is so sweet and honestly relieving to hear lol, I often feel like I don’t really know what I’m doing with Aphidclan. Like it’s a constant hazy state of cluelessness that I’ve just grown used to. Im not very aware of like… what my work reads as to others? Man I dunno if you guys even know what’s going on lmao. So it’s really nice to hear an outside perspective and realize that’s probably just a me thing. And that it’s impressive??? Damn, man, thank you lol
I’ve never quite done anything like Aphidclan before. It started at a time in my life when I was…technically my gender exploration journey started months earlier than this, but it was kinda started at the cusp of my own gender identity exploration,,explosion. The first thing I wanted to explore was being xenogender (other folk go from “cisgender —> maybe I’m non-binary or trans…” in their journey like normal people but nah man. before anything else occurred to me I went from “im cisgender” to “maybe I’m a neon rainbow insect with neopronouns actually :)” lmao) and that coincided really well with the rise of the clangen trend, so I figured I’d use some brand new OCs to explore gender identity in a…safe way? In a safe little pocket where it was all,,,nonconsequential and only tangential to my own identity. And I ended up exploring transgender and non-binary identities as well very frequently, which was mostly helped by the game giving me cats with assigned genders/sexes and me squinting at them and going “…nah. that’s a unicorncore trans man if I ever seen one” and reversing it, and then transing half the cast lmao.
I was not transgender going into this comic. I am now coming out of our first year with Aphidclan as a transmasc nonbinary man <3
I never intended it to be a thing for representation points exactly? I was certainly surprised by the lack of xenogender and more complicated/unusual LGBTQ gender identities depicted in all media ever! I still don’t really understand why something like neopronouns aren’t more present? They’re the coolest shit ever. Like- we’ve broken down gender norms and gender roles so much that now gender is not just “feminine” and “masculine,” it’s anything and everything you could ever want it to be. It’s ultimate freedom. It’s not just what it means to be “man” or “woman,” it’s “but what if I was more than that? What if I felt like a bug? Or a rainbow? Or a cloud? Or a connection to nature and the ocean and the stars? What if I felt like I was part of the universe? Or a music genre, or a concept, or a candy bar, an animal, a fairy, a slice of fruit!” You could be anything you’ve ever dreamed of being and more.
And once you get used to the funky grammar of neopronouns, it’s not that polarizingly different from other identities at all, honestly. And plus, it’s really fkin fun lol.
Aphidclan’s helped me explore a lot throughout this year. There were often times where I was struggling with my own femininity as a trans man and I remembered Firebeetle and the support I’ve received for his character, and using “well, if it’s okay for firebeetle to wear dresses and flowers and feminine things, then it’s okay for me to do that too, and it doesn’t invalidate my identity at all” and it really helped. 2024 was a great year for me creatively and exploration-wise, and I’ll certainly never be the same. Thank you guys for all your support, it means a lot <3
#and this came as a surprise to me but I’ve received like 10x more support for the xenogenders than hate comments#I’ve received ONE singular negative comment about the neopronouns. in a whole year of doing this regularly#i deleted it immediately without responding and blocked the guy so you won’t find it anywhere#but that just is wonderful to me the sheer amount of support and kinship other people have expressed#there’s a whole community for this stuff anywhere you look and I’ve carved my own little pocket for it and that’s really sweet#anyway#I’m happy with 2024s Aphidclan year#and excited for more Aphidclan in 2025! happy new year!!#aphidasks#clangen#wc clangen#warriors#xenogender

Oh my god 2025 ummm what the fuck amirite (it's not even for me yet it's over 10pm)
Okay so um hi hey hello. What a year huh (at least for me). So wild I transed my whole gender like damn the she/her to he/him pipeline was so real but ANYWAYS
I already said quite a bit during Christmas here but I would be lying if I said I didn't have a million more things to say. Even more to some certain mutuals/friends that have really been nothing but kind to me. Some old ones, some recent ones, I can't list everyone but I genuinely just appreciate any amount of support and love, big or small.
I've been thinking about whether I should directly say a few things to some mutuals/friends for a while (and I already have to some, but I don't mind repeating myself lol), but I think New Year's is the perfect chance to do so.
Apologies for the tagging in advance SUDISAHFIUHISDE

@crystallizsch I have already expressed to you how much I appreciate and grateful I am to you for encouraging me to make this blog, way before we had ever even interacted. I love you a lot buddy, you're absolutely the best<3
@oya-oya-okay OYAAA OYA OYAAA!!! I love you sm my darling friend, your kind words and support have genuinely been some of the biggest reasons I pushed through this year. I know the latter part of this year has been really hard for you, but I want you to know you have my support for whatever you need <3
@viperbunnies YOU HAVE MADE ME SOBBED SM ESPECIALLY WITH YOUR GIFTS. I sometimes go back to see your art of my persona or my oc just to make myself feel a little better. Ty for making me feel part of this amazing community (PS. I still get shroompocalypse war flashbacks/j) <3
@fell-e We have mostly chatted on Discord recently and legit you're one of the funniest and nicest people I've had the pleasure of talking to! I can't wait to interact more in 2025, you're such a nice person to be around <3
@lficanthaveloveiwantpower Hi Nah! We don't interact really one-on-one, but the kind words you've given me have always made me smile. You're one of the biggest reasons I got comfortable with openly self-shipping and sharing my thoughts about my f/os. And don't even let me mention how much joy your art has given me, you're seriously one of the best artists I've had the pleasure of being mutuals with <3
@theolivetree123 I'm a sucker for your ocs I won't even lie they're always so creative and fun! Still remember the time you asked to be mutuals and I just DIE/pos. It really was a pleasant surprise and I look forward to every post you make, whether it's art or just talking about your ocs and dynamics! You're extremely creative you genuinely inspire me a lot <3
@sunnysidesevenup I KNNNNOOOOWWWW we became moots pretty recently but like. You're so cool dude wtf. Legit freaked out when YOU followed ME first. I got cold feet about following you back for a while ahaha.....but I'm so happy I did you're such a fun dude I love your creations so much too (low-key biased towards Tilly...I love him sm and for what...)
@jadelover69 MIMI YOU ARE SO FUN, JUST SOO FUN TO INTERACT WITH YOUR WHOLE ENERGY IS SOOO SDUBHDSJNAGISBSJDH/POS your reblogs always make me giggle, even if it's just you straight up dying <3 Tysm for showing so much love for my creations, it means the absolute world
@summerspook You madman. I can't believe we've been friends for almost 2 years online. You have helped me through so much stuff, sometimes I even felt guilty about it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being one of my bestest friends, talking to you is one of the main things I look forward to every day, I can't express how much appreciate you and our friendship <3
-
OKAY THIS IS ALL FOR NOW there are more of you but I can't articulate my thoughts and feelings the best, but either way I love and appreciate all of you with all my heart.
New Year's has slowly lost its meaning for me (I'm neutral about it) but at least I get to use it to show my application to the people who have been with me this year, mutual or not tbh <3
Also if you wanna say something back but not publically, dms are open for mutuals <3
#ugh getting me sappy and emotional on main smhh#just.#my god what a year.#I never imagined this blog would get this far#that I would actually make positives impacts on people#small or big#I just. idk never saw myself as someone who could#all my life I felt like I was nothing but trouble and a bother. so I focused all my energy to trying to help others#and I still do it to some extend. but I do try to prioritise myself way more than I used to#just the fact I my art is liked. hell even loved. by some people just#I don't even know. I don't have the words#it's overwhelming but in the best way#I get so giddy when people say nice things about my creations#because it makes me realise I can be so much more than just that annoying kid in the back of the class no one likes#I can do what I love and still have people like it. I don't need to bend over backwards for others to be liked and cared for#okay Im quite emotional now I think I will explode#harry's rants

Kind of related to the 't makes you a mansplainer' thing I'm always amazed by thr difference in the way people perceive my music now. Pre t people thought it was cool that I played guitar but the second my voice started dropping and my beard started coming in people started getting annoyed by it. I started getting "no one wants to hear wonderwall" (I've never played that song) and "we don't need another man with an acoustic guitar". I don't even pass yet. That shift was instantaneous. And it's from the exact same people who thought it was cool before at a queer drop in center i go to, they used to turn down the music playing in the center because people were listening to me, going through my songbook and making requests. Now I'm lucky if I can play 1 song before someone tells me to stop because "no one wants to hear another man with an acoustic guitar"
It really hurts makes me want to quit playing.
Like I know t ruined my singing voice but damn, I just want to play my guitar I worked hard to teach myself to play.
Its so aggravating to me how cis, binary feminism has people treating trans men like we aren't an oppressed group. Erasing all of our unique experiences and struggles and perspectives to make us seem like Cis Men But Short And Weird. Your experience reminds me of people talking about how they went from being praised for being a woman in a male-dominated field to being ashamed of transitioning because they "failed" to "be a role model". In both cases, there's this assumption that trans men don't need support, that our accomplishments aren't hard-won, that we never struggle to make a place for ourselves in society. I mentioned in the notes of a post how we need a good word to describe being unfairly cast as an oppressor to cover up/ignore oppression (not just for transandrophobia but also antisemitism) because its so fucking concerning!! Its like people are specifically blinding themselves to trans men's transness and doing everything in their power to act like we're cis men. And its because thats basically what cis feminism does- there are only two roles, Woman (oppressed) and Man (oppressor), and by and large it only has two ways of reacting to trans men: either we're oppressed (by misogyny and nothing else) Women, or we're oppressors and Men. There isn't any way for us to place ourselves in this binary without harming ourselves. And so much of the time, this ideology ends up with us being punching bags for other people to take out their anger and trauma from cis men at an target they can have power over, while justifying it by saying that we're privileged men who need to suck it up and stop being so sensitive.
I'm going on a tangent but the point is: I'm mad as fuck that you are getting treated like this. I absolutely do want to hear more trans men playing acoustic guitar, because I never get to see trans men doing fucking anything! Being recognized as men and as equally male as cis men should not have to come at the cost of being recognized and supported like other marginalized genders. I'm so sorry you've had to go through that and I hope you are able to find people & a community that celebrates you and your talents like you deserve.

What if a teen reader ACCIDENTALLY came out to the TF2 mercenaries? "came out" meaning generally queer in sexuality. the teen would be worried and anxious afterward because they don't want the mercs to hate them for it. (this is based on myself as a girl-loving girl but it can be written for any gender)
you ask, you finally receive. Might start cutting requests down. idk, I feel like writing for some reason. Who knows how long that's gonna last, though.
also, REQUESTS ARE OPEN, just be aware that i might not get it out for a long, long time because motivation works weirdly😇
Mercs with a queer reader (PART 1)
Scout, Engineer, Medic
Warnings : fear of being rejected, swearing, a couple of hcs, medic is his own warning
Being queer is hard. And being able to not tell anyone (if you're like me and wanna live comfortably) is hard too.
The way they find out is if you got really cosy with them, and I'm talking being invited to Engie's barbecues, Spy letting you smoke one of his fancy ass cigars, and Scout tossing balls to you and acting like an older brother towards you kind of cosy.
So, one day, you accidentally let it slip during a conversation at dinner, having gotten way too comfortable.
Everyone except Medic and Spy was there, choosing to skip to do "work" instead. Your words quieted the whole damn room.
Whatever you did next is up to you. Whether you took it on proudly and kept eating or walked off to your bedroom to cry, up to you.
Reactions
Scout
Scout's unfamiliar with queer people. He didn't know any, and he wasn't taught anything about them.
He is especially unfamiliar with queer men. If you are a queer man, he'd be asking you all the time when he first finds out:
"How don't you find her hot? Or her? Do you find 'dat asshole, Spy hot? Is 'dat how dis works???"
Not with the intention of being slightly offensive, though. Just curious because he kind of struggles to wrap his head around the fact you're queer.
He always had a feeling that you weren't straight as a line, though. He hung around you a lot, even if you were annoyed by him, because he kind of wanted to finally be an older brother because he's always been the youngest.
So this is all a learning experience for him.
He'd definitely stay quiet for a little while, scaring you, before he randomly approaches you the next day.
"So... you like, what... in ta' ladies/dudes?"
(If you like girls, he'd definitely be the guy to say, "Holy shit, me too!" As a way to bond)
"Yeah."
"That's cool... that's cool... wanna talk about it more, or do you wanna go play ball?"
"Play ball."
"Let's go play ball, 'den."
Nothing changes about your relationship. Although he does occasionally ask if someone is your type or not, wanting to learn more about you. But in the end, as long as you still wanna hang around with him, he'll be chill.
Engineer
Unlike Scout, he is educated in queer people. He knows a couple, and he thinks they're pretty cool. Medic is also out to him because he's definitely gay (and trans because I like it that way)
Absolutely nothing changes with Engineer. He doesn't treat you any different or ask you any questions, just continues as normal, but encourages you to talk to him about things because he's definitely experienced it himself.
"You know, you could'a told me that earlier. I wouldn't have judged ya'. I've roamed around that area myself a little too."
"YOU WHAT?!?"
He just likes to get out there and try random shit. He looks like a boring guy, but he's way deeper than the southern merc on the surface.
Just talk to him :(
Medic
He wasn't there when you accidentally came out. He was finishing up an experiment on some organs.
When someone does tell him about it, though, he can't care less because he's queer too.
He also transed his gender. It's not my problem, it's yours now.
Definitely did his own top surgery ngl. Madman. Also discovered how to extract testosterone from sources and synthetically make it. Officially, a pioneer in trans healthcare. Hit him up if you want sum.
He treats you normally because he really doesn't give a fuck. He basically comes out to you as well, though:
"So you don't care."
"Nope."
"Why...?"
"What do you think Heavy and I do while we are working together... and the rest of you are eating?"
"..."
"Wait a minute... wait a... oh."
"Ja."
"HOW ARE STILL ALIVE?! 😭"
Definitely in love with his unofficial soul mate, the Heavy weapons guy.
I'm gonna do parts to this, actually. I'll make a part 2 and a part 3 another day that is even more random. I just need a break cause this is just a little bit lengthy. Ty got reading and sorry if it isn't exactly what you wanted 💀. I focused it a lot on the mercs instead of readers' anxiety.
Also, if you don't agree with my medic hcs, lol, fair enough 🥺

everyone's trans in the last unicorn
Oops it's the supermoon and I stayed up all night writing what'll have to be the first of 2-3 effortposts on transness and gender roles in Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn. This one is about the three main characters' trans-coded introductions, plus Daniel M. Lavery's 2017-2020 writing on transition as intertexts/reception of the book. All the rest under the cut.
"We all know the unicorn and Molly Grue are transgender," I said flippantly to @literarymagpie yesterday, and it turns out maybe we do not all know this, so now it's finally time I write the essays I've been drafting in my head for five years about The Last Unicorn and the things Peter S. Beagle didn't know he knew.
My secondary source for this theme is Daniel Lavery, who, in his 2017 essay on gc2b binders, described the first stages of his transition as follows:
I knew nothing of the subject. I became aware of the subject. I immediately, and carefully avoiding too much direct thought about the matter, sought consummation with it. Since that day, the subject has rarely been far from my conscious thoughts. It has felt, alternately and sometimes simultaneously, thrilling, calming to the point of near-stupor, destabilizing, reassuring, necessary, mundane, intrusive, overwhelming, compulsory, and desirable.
Beagle's last unicorn lives in a lilac wood, and she lives all alone, oblivious and content for over a century. Upon overhearing that there may be no other unicorns left, she considers her identity and questions her place in the world for the first time. Here she is on pp. 6-7, quite certain at first that she belongs in her familiar forest:
"Oh, I could never leave this, I never could, not even if I really were the only unicorn in the world. I know how to live here, I know how everything smells, and tastes, and is."
[...]But suppose they are hiding together, somewhere far away? What if they are hiding and waiting for me?
From that first moment of doubt, there was no peace for her; from the time she first imagined leaving her forest, she could not stand in one place without wanting to be somewhere else. She trotted up and down beside her pool, restless and unhappy. Unicorns are not meant to make choices. She said no, and yes, and no again, day and night, and for the first time she began to feel the minutes crawling over her like worms.
I'm not even sure I want hormones. I'm pretty sure I don't want them, because I think about going on hormones all the time, and those thoughts always end in some variation of "I can't, not ever," and if I really wanted to try hormones obviously I wouldn't keep thinking about how I can't try them. I think about them all the time and have to constantly stop myself, so I must not really want them. You know how when you're profoundly curious and sick with longing about something, it usually passes pretty quickly.
—Lavery again, from Something That May Shock and Discredit You, "The Stages of Not Going on T" (p. 60).
Speaking of T and not going on it, Beagle's next introduced main character is Schmendrick. Schmendrick is a wizard living in an insecure, stagnant, uncomfortable state that is explicitly symbolized by the fact that he can’t grow a beard and would like to. I don’t even need to make a case here. (I will anyway, though, in another installment.)
Our other main ally is Molly Grue, "a thin thorn of a woman" who stands out as the steel spine of Captain Cully's otherwise all-male, ridiculous crew. She's tough, smart, grizzled, kicked around by life. Her relationship with Cully is ambiguous; her feelings are clearly not warm. When Schmendrick scatters the merry men with a chaotic summoning, Molly's the only one to land on her feet and follow him into the wood.
Then she saw the unicorn. She neither moved nor spoke, but her tawny eyes were suddenly big with tears. [...] "Where have you been?" she cried. "Damn you, where have you been?" She took a few steps toward Schmendrick, but she was looking beyond him, at the unicorn. [...] "Where have you been?" Before the whiteness and the shining horn, Molly shrank to a shrilling beetle, but this time it was the unicorn's old dark eyes that looked down. "I am here now," she said at last. Molly laughed with her lips flat. "And what good is it to me that you're here now? Where were you twenty years ago, ten years ago? How dare you, how dare you come to me now, when I am this?" With a flap of her hand she summed herself up: barren face, desert eyes, and yellowing heart. "I wish you had never come, why do you come now?" The tears began to slide down the side of her nose. The unicorn made no reply, and Schmendrick said, "She is the last. She is the last unicorn in the world." "She would be," Molly sniffed. "She would be the last unicorn in the world to come to Molly Grue." She reached up then to lay her hand upon the unicorn's cheek; but both of them flinched a little, and the touch came to rest on the swift, shivering place under the jaw. Molly said, "It's all right. I forgive you." "Unicorns are not to be forgiven." The magician felt himself growing giddy with jealousy, not only of the touch but of something like a secret that was moving between Molly and the unicorn. "Unicorns are for beginnings," he said, "for innocence and purity, for newness. Unicorns are for young girls." Molly was stroking the unicorn's throat as timidly as though she were blind. She dried her grimy tears on the white mane. "You don't know much about unicorns," she said.
(pp. 96-98)
It leaps out to me that the crux of Schmendrick's jealousy is not the wish that he could touch a unicorn. More emphasis is placed on his envy of Molly's emotional experience—the recognition, the sobbing relief. Schmendrick needs this magnitude of affirmation too, but won't get it until the end of the book, and from a different front. More on his weird gender stuff in the second and probably third installments of this that I have to write next.
I'm not the only one to note this scene's transgender resonance. I first got it, once again, from Lavery, who borrowed Molly's despairing cry for a monologue in Something That May Shock and Discredit You. "Do You Know Athena Used to Be a Tomboy?" spoofs transphobic responses to trans men coming out, Greek drama style: the listener is "encouraged" to remain a woman by the goddess Athena (I didn't want to be a girl either, but then I learned to love myself, and to become the tutelary of Athens. Have you tried being the tutelary of Athens?); a Chorus: ("Well, of course we'd all be trans now, wouldn't we? Anyone born nowadays, that's just a given, they just—someone tells you at school, or something—everyone's trans now."); and a Deuteragonist, whose concern-trollish speeches gradually reveal more and more intense personal gender anxieties. From the final meltdown (pp. 188-189):
I mean, if I were thirty years younger—if I were twenty-five years younger—if I were eighteen years younger—God, if I were just ten years younger—if I were a year and a day younger—if you'd asked me just five minutes ago, four and a half even, if I'd picked up on the first ring instead of the third, I'd transition. Hell, I'd transition. Oh my God, I wish I could transition. Ask me again, but sooner. Come back yesterday. Come back a week ago. What good are you to me now, when I am—this? Where were you when there was still summer in my heart? Come back a month ago, a decade, but come back to me before I had to forgive you. Just come back and ask again; I'll wait if it takes forever this time.
I don't have much to add to that, really.
Next post will have to talk about the transformation of Amalthea. I'm not the first to observe that it's a potent dysphoria metaphor, but I've got more to unpack about Schmendrick's perspectives if he's trans, and there's a lot to dig into re. the love story with Prince Lir. I've also got some intense takes cooking on the tower scene with Haggard, if I get there. Anyway, thanks for reading! And thanks @endetithei for sharing this book with me as much as you have. (Sorry that this is how you'll find out I was up all night.)
